The St Arnaud resident's service was recognised as he became one of seven Victorians to receive an Ambulance Service Medal as part of the Australia Day awards service.
The lifetime St Arnaud resident said he was proud to receive the award for many years of service.
"I was, shall we say, not expecting it and I was a bit choked up by it," he said.

"Our family is very community-minded, we have probably spent 40 years volunteering with the CFA, Rotary and other groups as well.
"As we know the CFA wouldn't be what it is without volunteers, and without volunteers you haven't got the services, same with the SES and other volunteer groups in communities."
Despite being in his sixties and having worked in the role for over 20 years, Mr Fithall said he is not slowing down yet.
"I'll do it for as long as I can do it," he said.
"It certainly gives a different avenue to life instead of farming."

A statement on the Ambulance Victoria website said, "over the past two decades Greg has performer his role as an Ambulance Community Officer with unwavering personal dedication to community service and engagement".
"He has demonstrated diligence and self-sacrifice often having to forsake personal commitments to fulfill his duties as an ACO, for which Ambulance Victoria and the community and are sincerely indebted."
Mr Fithall, who lives on a farm just outside of St Arnaud, said he joined the town's Ambulance Victoria service 20 years ago when there was a need for an Ambulance Community Officer.
In this role, he supports the paramedics and can give necessary life support treatments and administer six different drugs.
Mr Fithall will accept his award from the Governor-General at a Government House ceremony in Melbourne on Tuesday, April 27.
