Council is proposing the area, which is located along 9-29 Maud Street, near the bottom of the Stawell Hospital, be named the Norman Castle Reserve in honour of the doctor who was a General Practitioner in the region for 57 years.
Councillor Kevin Erwin said the Northern Grampians Shire Council wanted to use this opportunity to recognise the work of Dr Castle.
In Monday's council meeting Cr Erwin said "most of us would know Dr Norman Castle did a lot for the town of Stawell and was recognised in the Stawell hospital".

"But these dams are located at the foot of the hospital, so I think it would be appropriate to have something long-term in Dr Castle's name," Cr Erwin said.
"The family has been contacted and is quite happy with that decision and we will see what the community say."
Councillor Rob Haswell also said naming the site after Dr Castle is an appropriate way "to commemorate all of his excellent work".
As part of the naming process the council is inviting comment from the community, and if there is significant support for the name it will be provided to Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) for confirmation.

Before deciding what name would be suitable for the area, council consulted the Stawell Historical Society, Stawell Recreation Advisory Group, Stawell Parks Precinct Community Reference Group and Barengi Gadjin Land Council.
After this consultation, a number of names were considered at a recent briefing before the council settled on Norman Castle Reserve and then sought and received the support of Dr Castle and the Castle family for the proposal.
The community can comment on the proposed name in writing to PO Box 580 Stawell 3380, email to ngshire@ngshire.vic.gov.au or hand delivered to the Council's Customer Service Centre.
There is also an opportunity to complete a Contact Us form online at www.ngshire.vic.gov.au, and comments must be received by Friday 12 February.
