Using a mix of classroom and field-based activities, the 17 new project firefighter recruits were taught essential elements of firefighting including fire behaviour, fire suppression and planned burning.
Recruits were also being trained in other safety and survival techniques such as four-wheel driving and use of chainsaws, which are essential for forest firefighting.

The recruits will now continue on-the-job learning alongside FFMVic's permanent staff and will respond to bushfires and conduct planned burns, slashing, track clearing and other land management activities.
Adhering to appropriate public health and hygiene guidelines, recruits were spread across training locations in Halls Gap, Cavendish, Horsham, Edenhope and Wail.
Online training also replaced demonstration days and practical sessions where possible.
Forest Fire Management Officer Operations Peter J Harradine said the recruitment process and training had been adapted to handle the challenges posed by coronavirus restrictions.
"We have managed to become very adaptable throughout every step of the process, with online recruitment and training replacing traditional methods," he said.
"Demonstration days and prac sessions normally held at air bases of fire towers have been filmed and will be delivered to participants over technology.
"All involved have been extremely committed through this unprecedented time and we look forward to seeing the positive outcomes from this new approach to training."
