Stawell Golf Club's Jo Orr heads into round three of 2020 women's championships with five shot lead

Orr came into the clubhouse with a second round stoke score of 91, a total of 177, leading Tania Dignan overall by five shots.

The 10 handicapper she could be superstitious at times and would keep things "relatively" the same heading into next week's final round.

"I played a terrible round today so I know I can do better than today," she said.

"It was pretty tough conditions with the wind and the rain but everyone had the same so no point complaining.

"I couldn't putt. I'm not a good putter anyway - I'll just put it behind me and go out next week and play my own game."

Orr started golf when her husband "bought every wife's dream gift for a birthday" - a set of golf clubs.

"I remember thinking is this a present for me or you," she laughed.

"He had forced me to have a hit and I didn't really want to so he bought me a set of clubs. But after that, I was hooked."

Orr said golf was a game she couldn't beat - and that's what had hooked her in for so many years.

"Every other sport I've played I know what I'm capable of and what I can and can't do," she said.

"This one I can't beat. It frustrates me - let's say I might have taught some older ladies how to swear.

"I don't read a lot into golf like a lot of people do, or overthink it. Maybe that's my problem.

"I like the social side of golf as well. If I'm playing into my 80s and 90s like some of them are at the club then I'm doing a pretty good job I think."

Playing alongside her mother Lyn Willcock, Orr said she felt lucky she was able to have the opportunity.

"It's always been a dream, just like people wanting to play netball with their daughters," she said.

"To get to play with Mum is really special. Some days she drives me bonkers asking if I am playing golf and even when I can't be bothered I go and play because you know what it means to her, and for myself.

"It's a pleasure to play with her and she does well herself out on the course."

Orr's father Phil Willcock also plays golf and the pair have teamed up for mixed events before.

"He gets me a bit stressed sometimes because I think he thinks I should be better than I am," she said.

"There is a bit of expectation there and it's probably from my end.

"When I play with my husband Gavin, I really enjoy it and I know he's the better golfer so I have those expectations of him in team events."

In her first year of playing, Orr won the C Grade championships and has gone on to be a regular feature on the honour board in A Grade as club champion.

Heading into the final round Orr said she would concentrate on playing her "own game" heading into the final round.

"It's just another round," she said.

"Tania is a very good golfer and very consistent. So I just need to worry about my own game and if I play well I will be happy no matter the outcome."
