About 75,000 lightning strikes were recorded within 100km of Sydney during the storm, according to Weatherzone.
Four people sitting under a tree in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens were knocked unconscious and sustained burns when the tree was hit by lightning at about 12.45pm.
The two men and two women were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The storms also wreaked havoc at Sydney Airport with hundreds of flights delayed and more than 30 cancelled.
NSW SES is urging the public to take care on the roads with some trees down and water over main roads on February 20.
The stormy weather continues with similar conditions possible for the Northern Rivers, Illawarra and Riverina regions.
