CHEIF Health Officer Brett Sutton has confirmed COVID-19 fragments have been detected in wastewater around Bendigo.
He said repeated unexpected detections were found in areas that include parts of Huntly, Epsom, Strathdale, Kangaroo Flat and Maiden Gully between October 7 and 12.
"The detections could be an undiscovered new case or cases or could be the result of one or more people in these areas who have recovered from COVID-19 but are still shedding the virus," Professor Sutton said.
"Anyone who lives in, works in or has visited the areas above is urged to watch for the mildest of COVID-19 symptoms and get tested as soon as possible if symptoms develop."

REGIONAL Victoria's outbreak spread is largely "stable", chief medical officer Brett Sutton says.
Those cases accounted for around eight per cent of the total 1571 confirmed on Tuesday.
"But we have seen more cases, including some increased cases in Baw Baw, Greater Geelong, Greater Shepparton and Mildura," Dr Sutton said.
"We've also seen a handful of cases in Swan Hill, very likely linked to Mildura, so we're asking everyone in Swan Hill, be alert to symptoms and get tested."

The Mitchell Shire will come out of lockdown tonight and have the same restrictions as the rest of regional Victoria.
The limited reasons to leave home and the 15km travel radius will no longer apply in Mitchell Shire.
The shire bordering Greater Bendigo near Heathcote has seen a high number of cases.
The Department of Health said yesterday that there were 113 people with the virus.
Health minister Martin Foley said the changes have been made possible because of the high rates of vaccinations in Mitchell Shire and the public's hard work.
"Whether it's unlinked cases, cases whilst infectious in the community, they've all stabilised," he said.
"The public health team is confident that the outbreak is now understood and is being well managed."
