Mr Gready said he had thought about nominating for a number of years after discussing it with friends.
"We were talking about Council and we weren't happy with a decision," he said.
"I thought well, you shouldn't really get cross unless you are prepared to have a go yourself.
"From them it stuck in my mind."
Mr Gready said he didn't nominate when the original election was on as he had been battling a medical illness and was waiting on results.

"I thought I would wait and see and I never got my results until after nominations closed," he said.
"But since no one nominated, I got my results, and thought why not? Why not have a go."
Mr Gready lives in the South West Ward and said he was really interested in the area and was ready to be the voice of his community.
"I've been around talking to the residents of Halls Gap and in Great Western," he said.
"I was just getting a feel about what they think so I have a bit of a heads up if I was to be elected.
"It's been really good and had some really good feedback from some locals out here.
"I bring community leadership with honesty, trustworthiness, and transparency. I am approachable and bring my local experience to the table as we work to make a better 2021 and beyond."
Mr Gready said win, lose or draw he would take away a plethora of information away from the experience.
"I've done a lot of reading about the Council and I probably am more in tune with the area than I've ever been," he said.
"Even if I don't get in I will be a lot more active in the area anyway.
"My vision is for the continued growth and innovation to support and improve local communities while seeking to promote new businesses and the potential for tourism working with all the community and council for the betterment of the Northern Grampians Shire."
