The Bureau of Meteorology says this is due to an approaching cold front which will cross the state tonight.
The short, sharp burst is one final winter cold snap, which should be gone by the middle of Friday.
Stawell saw gusts of wind of up to 61 kilometres per hour at 5.30pm.
While at Mount William in the Grampians, gusts reached 87 kilometres an hour, and 3.2 millimetres of rain has fallen since 6pm.
The temperature has dropped to 1.4 degrees on the mountain.
