The mural located at Monaghan's Real Estate took artists Peter Voice and Bev Issac more than 300 hours to complete.
Monaghan director Terry Monaghan said the idea was influenced by other pieces of artwork around Stawell.
"I really had no idea what I wanted to put on the blank wall," he said.
"I wanted to put something significance but I was really struggling with what to come up with.
"I was standing there one day with my son Matt and he suggested maybe an image of the Main Street 100 years ago."
Mr Monaghan said once the idea was in place the project gained momentum.
"We went to the Historical Society, which was fabulous in finding old photographs for us to look at," he said.
"They were able to find a photo of the Main Street, taken from about that exact location.
"The artists were fantastic. It was a long process but a lovely one. I think they've done an absolutely ripping job and a worthwhile addition to the artwork already around town.
"A seat has been placed there by the council so people can sit up there and look at the mural and up the street at the same time."
Mr Voice said the project took about six months in the making.
"I'm really happy with how it turned out," he said.
"Because of the nature of the subject matter, there isn't a real lot of art in it.
"It's more of an exercise in draftsmanship. It was a pleasure delving into some of the histories of the buildings, the street and the town.
"It was a bit of fun doing the research and learning about the place."
Mr Voice said he anticipated the murals lifespan would be last a couple of decades.
"The mural may fade a bit but it won't detract from the concept."
