Sergeant Bill Alford, of St Arnaud, said police sustained minor injuries after they attended the supermarket about 2.15pm to bring in a minor, after the Department of Health and Human Services reported her missing from custody.
The minor was in the company of the 18-year-old male at the time.
As police escorted the pair out off the premises, the man 'rescued' the minor from police custody, assaulting police in the process.
"A short foot pursuit then took place, and both were apprehended," Sergeant Alford said.
"The friend was charged with assaulting police and rescuing the missing person. The missing person was returned to the custody of the DHHS and she will be interviewed at a later time for escaping legal custody.
"The 18-year-old male was charged and bailed to the St Arnaud (Magistrate's) Court for September."
