Both councils have expressed the cost disadvantages over grading during dryer weathers with costs listed as much as four times more to grade roads during drier months.
Up to seven graders are currently working across Ararat Rural City with more than 50 roads graded in June.
Grading works commenced in Northern Grampians Shire Council with about 20 roads, or part thereof, graded in the past two weeks with another 15 in the pipeline.
Ararat Rural City chief executive Dr Tim Harrison said it was fantastic the region had received decent rainfall recently as it meant the Council could get "cracking" on its grading program.
"Many of the municipality's gravel roads are in need of grading and using seven graders - five council-owned and two contract - enabled Council staff to make more efficient use of their time," he said.
"Our graders are spread right across the municipality to ensure the best coverage possible.
"The excellent soaking rains we've had recently have allowed us to grade the roads well and the ground moisture also ensures the newly graded road stays in good condition for longer with fewer corrugations."
A Northern Grampians Shire Council spokesman said the most is being made of the optimal conditions.
"n 2018-19, 40 per cent of the unsealed network was treated at least once, and a total of 46 roads required a second or third grade, equating to 189 kilometres and generally due to high levels of trafficked roads or bus routes," he said.
"During the same time period, the council engaged three contractors to assist with maintenance grading while conditions were best suited, which has enabled the savings in operating costs as well as being able to do more at the same time."
