Warrnambool brothers Christopher and Aaron Gillin who both suffered from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and started a campaign called One Lace at A Time.

Originally from Warrnambool, Mifsud said the Stawell-based football club have welcomed him into its community with open arms.

"I put a call out on our social media page about wearing green laces, the concept and meaning behind them and to see if I could get some support," he said.

"It's an honour to play football each week representing not only Christopher and Aaron, two inspirational men in my life, but all those who suffer from Muscular Dystrophy."

Mifsud grew up with the Gillin family and despite being older than the two boys, they always were part of his life.

"Unfortunately Aaron passed away in October 2017, aged 24. This hasn't stopped Chris from pushing on with the campaign and continuing to raise awareness so their dream of finding a cure happens," he said.

"Aaron and Chris both suffered from the disease, confined to wheelchairs as the disease causes muscle mass to deteriorate.

"The campaign is growing with Kid Rock and Kasey Chambers getting on board as well as AFL players and NBA basketballers.

"I'm happy I can do my part and even happier my new club has welcomed the idea and really got behind the cause."

Swifts senior co-coach Scott Carey said the club jumped at the chance to help drive an initiative of one of its club members.

"For a player in his first year at the club to feel that comfortable with us to ask everyone to come on board and give him a hand speaks for itself," he said.

"Most people coming into a club probably sit back and wait a couple of years to get involved but he's chucked his hand up and wants to continue in the work that he has done for this worthy cause."
