Community involvement: Volunteer at Grampians Flora Botanic Gardens and owner of Sundial Holiday Apartments in Halls Gap.
Favourite memory of volunteering: Finding out I had been dubbed “the Crazy Rake Lady” at the Halls Gap Gardens!
Favourite aspect of your town: Natural beauty of the Grampians right on the doorstep, the pride taken in it by our locals and by many such as myself with local interests, and the sheer enjoyment of all of it!
What motivates you to volunteer at this particular club/for this particular cause?
The gardens are run through the efforts of a small group of dedicated and caring volunteers on a “shoestring” budget, donations, hard-won grants and public sponsorship of garden beds. I jumped on board as more volunteers are needed, and for a mixture of “selfless” and “selfish” reasons. “Selfless” because I am able to make a visible difference to the presentation of the gardens through regular attendance to rake, weed and mow, the donation of a mulcher mower, plus my raising of funds through regularly singing and playing guitar at the local Kookaburra Hotel Bistro and at local markets, the funds of which are donated to these gardens; but “selfish” because the physical work helps to keep me fit, provides me with a community purpose, gives me exposure for my apartments and my singing, gives my grandchildren a place to learn about “supporting” community causes while running wild in a gorgeous environment, all while working in an environment with an outlook second to none!
It is also “time out” (100 per cent therapeutic) in an otherwise hectic life!!!
