School students set their sights on state titles when they competed in the Victorian North West Zone shooting competition earlier this month.
More than 50 students from schools from Hopetoun, Donald, Mildura, Kaniva, Swan Hill, St Arnaud, Maryborough, Castlemaine, Stawell and Irymple competed in the event at Kerang on August 16.
Stawell’s Cooper Reading had a standout competition, winning the senior boys division with a score of 21/25.
Mildura’s Bailey Kelly was the overall winner on the day, while Kaniva College won the teams competition.
Reading as well as other winners on the day qualified to compete at the state finals held at the Victorian State Ground at Echuca on the September 3.
“Competitions like these can be used as stepping stones for kids that want to shoot competitively,” North West Zone president Colin Dunn said.
“From there it can lead to state, national and even Olympic level shooting. There have been plenty of people who have done well at these comps who have gone on to bigger and better things.”
