The Lions hosted Ararat Eagles in a battle of 10th against 11th.
The teams could not be split early on, and it was the visitors that hit the lead at half-time, looking to extend Great Western’s losing run.
Ararat built their lead out to six goals by the final break, making things tough for the Lions. Great Western mixed things up in the final term, throwing Dayle Bird back into shooter, a move which paid off.
Bird shot 13 of her side’s 20 last quarter goals as Great Western ran away with a 45-42 win, its third of the season.
Sophie Graham was influential rotating through goal and wing attack while Alanna Woods was once again strong for the Lions.
“The main feeling was relief. The girls have worked so hard so it is great for them to finally be rewarded,” Great Western coach Amy Kindred said.
”The improvement in the last few weeks has been phenomenal.”
