The rally is a challenge to drive cars worth $1000 or less from Brisbane to Darwin to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Adam Greenberger went to Stawell Secondary College and now works as an environmental consultant.
His team, the Hail Mary’s, is aiming to raise $5000 for cancer research.
Mr Greenberger is entering the race for family, friends and “anyone who has been impacted by cancer”. He is also entering for his grandfather.
“My first memory of cancer was when I was … young. I can’t remember how young I was when my grandfather was diagnosed with throat cancer, but I do remember the aftermath,” Mr Greenberger said.
“I also remember his funeral, when finally, after the cancer had returned after five long years of remission, he had had enough.
“I am there (in the race) to remember. I am there to raise awareness. I am there to support the charity.”
Mr Greenberger’s mum Jenny said: “I am very proud of Adam for taking this cause as it was my father who had cancer...I too have been touched by cancer, being a survivor of breast cancer myself eight years a go”.
The Pomonal Estate Winery will host an event on May 12 to assist with fundraising efforts.
Box Rallies founder James Freeman said the event was not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts.
“This is a chance to explore Australia, drawing teams from around the country to help achieve the extraordinary,” Mr Freeman said.
“We’re grateful for the support of the teams who take part and the communities who help them to fundraise.”
