Carey sustained the injury in the first five minutes of the match against Edenhope-Apsley but continued on, playing out the rest of his 200th match in pain.
“I went to the specialist during the week and they did an x-ray which confirmed it was broken,” Carey said.
“It has cracked length-ways down the bone.”
The reigning Dellar medalist will undergo surgery on Friday. Screws will be inserted to ensure the bones heal properly.
“At this stage it looks like it will be at least six weeks until I am back,” Carey said.

Swifts will welcome back experienced midfielder Daniel Parkin to the side for Saturday’s game to help fill the void Carey leaves.
Big forward Ben Martin is also in doubt for the clash after missing the final quarter against the Saints with a recurring foot issue.
“He had a light run Tuesday so we will assess it closer to the game,” Carey said.
“Our reserves are in some good form so we have a few players at our disposal.”
Despite being ruled out for the next month and a half Carey said there are some positives to take from the situation.
“One positive is I will be able to see how things play out on the whole ground over the four quarters,” he said.
“I will have a better grasp on how our set ups are working and be able to make changes a lot quicker.”
