Accredited asbestos removalists worked to remove all asbestos materials from within the building on the corner of Sloane and Wimmera Streets.
The building was earmarked for demolition in October last year after being declared structurally unsound by the Northern Grampians Shire Council’s building maintenance department.
Contractors will start the remainder of the demolition works, which are expected to be completed by the end of the week, once an asbestos removal report was finalised.
The site will then be re-purposed as open parkland.
Northern Grampians Shire Council mayor Cr Tony Driscoll said the demolition of the site would lessen the financial burden of maintaining a building which was not suitable for public use in its current condition.
“The addition of further parkland and open space will also provide a further boost to the already outstanding aesthetic appeal of the Stawell town centre,” he said.
