A car has ploughed into a herd of sheep, killing up to 50 of the animals on the Wimmera Highway near Traynors Lagoon at 4.30am on Friday.
Stawell Sergeant Pete Young said Vic Roads attended the scene at 7.30am to clear the dead animals from the highway.
“At the moment there is no suspect but St Arnaud police are investigating the incident,” he said.
“Motorists need to be aware when driving around paddocks in the dark and farmers need to be aware that their fences are in good order and all animals are safely secured.”
Sergeant Young said Holden Hill, in between Stawell and Great Western, was notorious for a similar string of incidents.
“Farmers in the area have made a good effort to secure their paddocks there and we do not have any trouble in that area anymore,” he said.
St Arnaud Senior Constable Dan Wiseman said drivers needed to be mindful of potential hazards in stormy conditions.
“Drivers must always drive to conditions and farmers must secure their livestock in storms,” he said.
