The mine shaft of the historic Oriental Mine on crown land in Stawell collapsed, resulting in significant ground surface cracking 10-metres in diameter and an open shaft cavity 10 metres wide.
“We’re working with Northern Grampians Shire, Parks Victoria and local residents to secure the site with fencing and develop solutions for back-filling and sealing the open shaft,” the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s regional manager for land planning and approvals in the Grampians region Grant Hull said
“Signs have been erected to alert the public to the danger. Following an engineering assessment, we’ll engage earth moving contractors to back-fill and seal the shaft.”
