Don Webb honoured

STAWELL - Donald Webb OAM, of Stawell has been recognised with a Council on the Ageing Victoria Senior Achiever Award during the 2012 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards at Government House on Monday.

Minister for Ageing David Davis said the people of Stawell and surrounds have benefited for many years from the skills and wisdom of Mr Webb.

"As a volunteer committee member and project coordinator on a number of water-related organisations he has had a significant influence on the direction and operations of the Northern Grampians area," Mr Davis said.

"Mr Webb's expertise has led to significant improvements in water usage throughout the region.

"As chair of the Stawell Water Alternative Natural Solutions (SWANS) project he has done much to address flood mitigation and harvesting of storm water and he continues to be an active adviser.

"Water from SWANS dams enabled the Stawell Gift to be conducted in Central Park throughout the drought years."

Mr Davis said Mr Webb is also a driving force in the Stawell Lions Club and chair of the club's Federation Park project - a magnificent wetlands haven for local wildlife with a walking track and barbeque facilities.

"As treasurer of the Urban Fire Brigade State Titles organising committee, he has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the local fire brigade," Mr Davis said.

"He is also a cemetery trustee, a Stawell Gold Mine committee member, a Meals on Wheels volunteer and an active member of the bowls club."

Mr Webb, aged 80, was one of 12 seniors recognised at the 2012 Senior of the Year Awards, with awards presented by Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu and the Minister for Ageing David Davis.

Mr Davis said the awards, established more than 20 years ago, promote the achievements of senior Victorians and highlight the benefits of healthy and active ageing.

"The awards recognise and celebrate the many men and women aged 60 and over who make extraordinary contributions through active involvement in their communities and by supporting and inspiring others," Mr Davis said.
