Basketball stars share with juniors

STAWELL - Stawell youngsters Taya Chisholm and Declan Pyke were among more than five hundred Victorian children who converged on Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to participate in the McDonalds Basketball Super Clinic.

Australian basketball champion and National Basketball Association superstar Andrew Bogut was in attendance along with a host of other players from NBL club, Melbourne Tigers.

Andrew and the basketballers shared tips with the juniors, focusing on skills including shooting, passing and dribbling.

The clinic was split into two groups, each of 250, with children between the ages of five and eight in the morning session and nine to 12 year olds in the afternoon.

The first 10 minutes were dedicated to autograph signing.

Split into boys and girls age groups, the children went around to 10 different skills stations.

Taya Chisholm was in the seven year old girls group and mum Janelle said it was a brilliant set up.

"It was so much fun. All the kids got a showbag and the drills were good," Janelle said.

Taya was a bit nervous before participating, but now wants to play basketball even more following the Super Clinic.

"She knows it was a once in a lifetime experience and I'd highly recommend it," Janelle said.

"It was well worth the trip, that's for sure."

Declan Pyke's mother, Joan, agreed.

"It was good, really well organised. Declan got lots of freebies. It was low key - for all abilities. He really enjoyed it," Joan said.

Joan was impressed with Australian basketball star, Bogut, describing him as 'pleasant and engaging'.

"He was fantastic. He signed autographs and was pleasant in photos. It's a credit to him," she said.

Organised in association with Basketball Victoria, children aged between five and 12 years old won a place at the Super Clinic after entering an online competition.
