The Wimmera Regional Library Corporation will welcome Nicole to Horsham and Stawell libraries on Monday, September 14.
Wild Lands is set in the late 1830s.
“In 1838, NSW was a dangerous place. Settlers were cutting a swathe through the bush in search of fertile land, laying claim to territory beyond government jurisdiction – and the reach of the law,” Nicole said.
“This is the period that has inflamed historians in the debate known as the History Wars, the time of the Waterloo and Myall Creek massacres, when the first people of this new world refused to accept the white man’s advance and retaliatory attacks on both sides led to a frontier on the brink of war.”
Wild Lands is the coming of age story of Kate Carter, a young woman who accepts a position on an isolated farm, unaware she is entering a land of outlaws, adventurers and murderers.
Kate soon meets Bronzewing, a young white man schooled by a settler family and raised within an Aboriginal tribe.
He is fighting to save his adopted civilisation and together the pair quickly discover that beyond the outer limits is a beautiful yet terrifying place, where it is impossible to know who is your friend and who is your enemy.
Nicole has been passionate about writing for more than 25 years.
Her works reflect a sense of continuity and an inherent love for the land that is steeped in authenticity.
A fourth-generation grazier, Nicole returned to her family’s property in the early 1990s, and is currently the business manager there.
