SHE might be a hair’s breadth from her 100th birthday but Vincentia resident Rebecca Ferris has no plans to slow down.
The 98-year-old recently passed her older drivers’ licence test with flying colours.
Following the test the criticism from the practical test examiner was not about reverse parking, using indicators or speeding, it was only a gentle reminder that she wears her glasses when she is behind the wheel.
“I’m not a nervous driver, once I get in that driver’s seat I’m relaxed, I love it,” she said.
Mrs Ferris got her driver’s licence when she was 42 years old and in her 56 years on the road has never been booked.
“I’ve driven a lot over the years. I’ve even driven to Perth and Adelaide,” Mrs Ferris said.
“I remember my doctor got me to take a driving test some years ago just to be sure I was alright.
“Half way through that test the driving instructor told me to head back. He said I didn’t need to be tested,” she said.
As a senior Mrs Ferris has to do a driving test every two years.
“I have to admit I was a bit worried leading up to this one,” she said.
“I was thinking this could be my last and I would hate to lose that independence.
“But once we got in the car and started I was fine.
“I have never had an accident and I never speed.”
She said if older people were able to pass their driving tests and were confident to drive they should continue to be allowed to no matter how old they were.
