Caltex closed the Stawell service station in 2013 and intends to sell the site at a future date.
There are a number of steps that need to be undertaken before the site will be ready for a new owner.
Caltex has decommissioned and removed the on-site infrastructure, including the shop, tanks and fuel pumps.
It has engaged environmental consultants, Coffey, to carry out environmental assessments to identify if any remediation of the site is needed.
Coffey has commenced its assessment work and it is expected to take at least six months.
Caltex spokesperson Sam Collyer said the company's current focus is on the site assessment and remediation work being conducted by Coffey.
"Once this work is complete, Caltex will shift its focus to divesting the site, no date has been set for bringing this property onto the market," he said.
"Our focus is not on the cost, but on ensuring the work is carried out to the required standard to ensure the site is ready for sale."
