District 9780 is a group of 60 Rotary Clubs across south and west Victoria and South Australia. The District Governor of this district is required to visit every club in this district during his or her incumbency.
Recently, it was Stawell Rotary Club's turn to host District Governor Geoff James and his wife Meryl. Stawell Rotarians and Friends of Rotary gathered at Mokepilly Cafe for a meal and to listen to District Governor James' address.
Born in Taiwan, Rotary International President Gary Huang chose "Light Up Rotary Together" for his theme in 2014-15, inspired by Confucius' wisdom that "it is better to light a single candle than to sit an curse the darkness".
Following up this theme, D.G. James addressed the meeting and listed twenty-seven ways members can Light up Rotary.
"You might ask why there are 27," he said.
"Well, that's how many I discovered when I researched the Rotary experts. I did actually think about changing the number, but I Googled the number 27 on the internet, as you do and discovered that 27 is actually a lunar symbol for 'light in the darkness'.
"Honestly - so 27 steps it is and I want to share these possible steps on four levels - the personal level, the inter-personal or club level, the community level and the level of the Planet."
Mrs Meryl James has chosen to promote the Aquabox as her project for the year. Aquabox is essentially a lifesaving water tank with water filters and water treatment tablets that can convert up to 2,000 litres of polluted water, making it safe and pleasant to drink. As an example, 2000 litres is equal to 10,000 cups - that is enough for a family of four people (drinking 10 cups per day) for about eight months. The boxes are also filled with emergency aid to reduce the suffering during the aftermath of a disaster.
Estimates suggest 25,000 children die every day from the effects of drinking polluted water. With the community's help, Aquabox can play a vital part in minimising the after effects of disaster. The Aquabox is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Eltham, Victoria.
