Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the completion of a new $6.3 million upgrade at Pimpinio made Victoria's primary east-west artery safer between Horsham and Dimboola.
"These are two of 11 new overtaking lanes we are building on the Western Highway between Stawell and the South Australian border," Mr Truss said.
Federal Member for Mallee Andrew Broad said new lanes had been built both east and west of Pimpinio.
"The new overtaking lanes are each two kilometres in length, providing drivers travelling in both directions with a good length of time to pass slow and long vehicles," Mr Broad said.
"This will reduce the risk of head on collisions on the highway, and the length of the overtaking lane will provide more time for traffic to merge safely."
Victorian Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said this was one of many projects currently underway on the Western Highway.
"We are shortly expecting completion of the $4.26 million upgrade to the nearby Wimmera River Bridges, which will strengthen the crossing for increased traffic volumes into the future," Mr Mulder said.
The new overtaking lanes and upgrades to the Wimmera River Bridges are part of a $48.45 million joint package of works with the Australian ($40 million) and Victorian ($8.45 million) Governments, to upgrade the Western Highway between Stawell and the South Australian border.
