The reserve formed part of Council's Stawell Parks Precinct Master Plan commenced in 2018, a key component of the NGSC Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2020.

Northern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Murray Emerson said the reserve naming was a very fitting commemoration.

"I can think of no one worthier than Dr Castle, after so many years of dedicated work as a medical professional and leader in our shire community," Cr Emerson said.

"It's so lovely to stroll through this reserve, its water features and gardens appropriately adjoining our two key healthcare services, the hospital and the residential care facility, and be reminded every time of Dr Castle's contribution."

Dr Norman Castle OAM was a much revered and respected community leader and former doctor of Stawell Regional Health.

He spent over 50 years practising medicine and was a trustee of the Stawell Hospital foundation for 30 years as well as a hospital board member.

Dr Castle was recognised with an Order of Australia medal for services to medicine and the community in 1999.

Dr Castle passed away on 12 February this year.

Council sought permission from his widow Noelene and family to rename the site in his memory.

The family are very touched and it is hoped that a formal opening of the reserve will be held later in 2021 when restrictions ease and family members, some of whom are interstate, can reunite for this event.

The site, located at 9-29 Maud Street at the rear of Stawell Regional Health, has been redeveloped as community space by council with walking tracks and signage.

At council's February meeting, councillors resolved to commence the naming process and invited public comment on the suggested name of Norman Castle Reserve.

Community engagement was conducted via print and social media indicating that the community fully endorsed the proposed name.
