Mr Ramsay said the scam obtained personal information.
“Customers are receiving messages claiming they have won a $2000 Woolworths gift card as part of their customer of the month program; consumers are then required to answer a series of questions and finally register their private details to be put into a draw for the prize,” he said.
“There needs to be an immediate investigation into the current sales practice of gift cards to see if they meet the consumer protection test.
“This promotion is completely misleading and deceptive and in no way a reflection of the message.”
The message reads, Congratulations! You have won a $2,000 Woolworths gift card as part of our Customer of the Month program.
Mr Ramsay said he felt sorry for those who believed they had won, only to discover it was a “ruse”.
“This deceit has to stop, and I call on the Minister to bring these shoddy promotional campaigns by these large retail businesses into line,” he said.
Woolworths confirmed it was a scam which they had no affiliation with.
“Woolworths has no affiliation with these scams,” a spokesperson said.
“The Woolworths customers should be aware of scams which imitate well-known organisations to indirectly solicit money.
“These scams have been reported to ACCC's SCAM Watch. We encourage our customers to contact the local authorities should they believe they are engaged in this or any other scam.”
