It is a touching story as to why Ms McPhee began painting and the emotion of her story can be seen in each of her pieces.
“I have always been interested in painting but my inspiration came from a very special girlfriend, who was quite ill and who would’ve loved to learn to paint,” She said.
“Sadly she is no longer with us but she inspired me to learn for us both.”
Ms McPhee was a late bloomer in terms of becoming an artist, but she has taken each challenge in her stride.
“In 2014 I decided to attend the Annual Grampians Brushes week,” Ms McPhee said.
With little experience McPhee took classes to help develop her skills.
“There was a couple of one day classes in the mediums of pastel and charcoal, previously I had only dabbled with folk art some 20 years earlier,” she said.
“Having traveled extensively with my husband in Australia, I am most influenced by the bush and the colours of the outback.”
Ms McPhee finds her happy place with a brush in hand.
“I love the freedom and the relaxation that I feel when painting,” Ms McPhee said.
“Painting plays a large part in enriching my life.”
Grampians Brushes will take place from September 9, to November 4.
Entry is free.
