Minyip-Murtoa Burras will take on the Horsham Saints. Saints is the only team to have beaten the minor premiers this year.
Burras coach Jaye Macumber said the Saints were the form team of the competition heading into the match.
“The Saints have had the wood on us the last couple of games,” he said.
“They are playing really good footy and we’ll need to lift our intensity against them.”
On the back of winning the minor premiership, the Burras had the first week of finals off. After a training session at Dimboola on Saturday morning, the team travelled to Nhill to watch as the Saints defeated Stawell in the qualifying final.
It was a welcome opportunity for sore bodies in the side to rest before launching a finals campaign.
“We had John and Kieran Delahunty as well as Blake Young out in round 16,” Macumber said.
“We’re confident they should be right this week.”
Saint’s coach Shayne Breuer said the way his team was positioned playing in the first week of finals was good.
“It depends where you’re at personnel wise,” he said.
“When you’re on a roll and playing good footy it can be good to just keep going.
“For us we’re lucky because we don’t have too many injuries.”
Macumber did not expect his side to be disadvantaged by not having experienced finals football already in 2016.
“Players from both sides were saying round 16 was a finals like intensity,” he said.
The game is poised to be another good one with either side capable of securing the first spot in the grand final.
During the regular season the sides met three times.
The Burras comfortably won the first encounter before the Saints won in rounds eight and 16.
Breuer said his side would take confidence from knowing its best footy could compete but denied he knew the secret to beating the Burras.
“Sometimes we over complicate footy,” he said.
“I think it’s just a matter of making sure you limit your turnovers and making the most of your opportunities.
“They’ve got 21 guys that can have a big impact so it is up to us to have 21 guys all ready to play as well.”
Macumber agreed with the sentiment and expected his players to be ready for their first final of the season.
“From a coaching point of view I don’t think the Saints have a mental edge,” he said.
“It’s just one of those things over the last couple of meetings that they’ve beaten us. If you went back and looked at it quarter by quarter over the past two seasons it would probably end up pretty even.” Both sides have players facing fitness tests. The coaches also signalled possible changes based on weather.
