Swifts led for the majority of the game, but the Panthers pounced on an opportunity to claw back in the final quarter.
Rupanyup worked hard to level the scores in the fourth quarter but Swifts proved too good, taking the win 11.9 (75) to 9.8 (62). Swifts coach Scott Carey said his side put in a solid three-quarters.
“We had a strong lead on the scoreboard but Rupanyup kicked into gear in the last quarter,” he said.
“They kicked about three goals in three minutes, so all credit to them to be able to get into gear and make it interesting.
“We were certainly wary that if we were off our game they’d punish us. Luckily we did the hard work early and were able to hold on for the win.”
Ryan Folkes had a standout game as did Nicholas Pickering and Jake Goodes, who were instrumental in holding up Swifts backline. Damon Folkes booted five goals for Swifts.
