STAWELL - Event organisers from across Northern Grampians Shire are being invited to promote their local event on new highway sign frames that have been installed on the Western Highway in Stawell.
The frames are designed to hold temporary signs on a rotating basis to promote current events and tourist attractions in the area. They are available to any community organisation who wishes to use them.
The frames have been installed to support the recovery of business and tourism after the 2011 floods, with Northern Grampians Shire Council obtaining State Government funding for the project through its Flood Recovery Team.
Council CEO, Justine Linley said the six sign frames have been designed by Flood Recovery Project Engineer, Kandee Balasingham and were built with thanks to Stawell businesses Ricksteel, builder Bill Kemp and Andrew Kennedy of Grafx-Inc.
Mrs Linley said three sign frames have been installed at both the eastern and western entrances to the town after approval by VicRoads, which manages the road.
"The new sign frames are a fantastic opportunity for community organisations to promote their events to the many hundreds of people who travel through Stawell along the Western Highway every day," she said.
"The sign frames will also give the Council and the community a chance to show all those people what a vibrant and exciting city Stawell is. We hope this will encourage people to return to the area for the many and varied events we host each year."
The first temporary signs went into the frames on September 18, including ones that promote the Stawell Gift Hall of Fame, the Stawell Farmers' Market, and the Stawell Orchid Show.
Mrs Linley said the council had developed guidelines for the use of the sign frames to ensure the town entrances are tidy and free from unauthorised signage in an effort to enhance tourism.
Some of the guidelines include:
Event signs are to be erected no more than four weeks before an event and will be taken down within one week of the event finishing.
The cost of manufacturing the temporary sign must be met by the event organising committee.
The final design of the sign must be approved by Northern Grampians Shire Council.
All signs are to be installed by council works staff and will be based on a rotational roster.
Event organisers need to contact the Council's Projects and Events Officer before any signs are ordered.
