There were caravans, boats, utes and jet skis out on the water, with the odd game of “beach” cricket being played along the lake’s foreshore.
The Ararat Advertiser’s photographer, Peter Pickering, has fond memories of camping at the lake and it was his idea to head out there to capture the Australia Day festivities.
“It’s the prettiest and best skiing spot in Victoria,” Mr Pickering said.
“It’s very good for the local communities, with visitors going into town for food and supplies. Now with water in it, it’s better than ever.”
Mr Pickering said it was a great social place, with regular lake visitors from Ararat and Stawell joining people from the city in swimming, boating and water skiing out there.
Ararat resident, Kaye Powell, has been coming out to Lake Fyans for 65 years.
“We camped here as kids before it was commercially developed,” Mrs Powell said.
“It has a great family atmosphere and lifestyle.”
Fiona Taylor was enjoying the lake with friends and they had brought all the comforts from home – including a couch.
“We’re always out here,” Ms Taylor said.
“We’ve been coming out here every weekend in summer, and in winter. Every Australia Day, it’s like this (crowded). It’s crazy.”
As for the couch?
“The couch goes everywhere.”
