Top film prize for Times reviewer

Canberra Times' movie reviewer and regular contributor, Simon Weaving, pictured, has taken out a top prize at this year's Canberra Short Film Festival, landing the coveted award for best film in the Canberra local category.

The 10-minute drama Waiting for Robbo sees two robbers having a chat after a successful heist, debriefing one another on the events.

It was directed by Weaving and produced by Ivan Slavich and starred some well-known Australian actors, including John Wood, Justin Rosniak, Lawrence Leung and Rhys Muldoon.

The award has encouraged Weaving and his team to pursue plans to develop the piece into a feature film.

Other winners in the category included Marisa Martin for best sound for Grizzly Bear, Dallas Bland won best director for Blue World Order and best script went to Nathan Lovejoy for Last Christmas.

The best film in the documentary category went to Kris Kerehona for Dancing Auschwitz. The international section was won by Alex Korin from Israel for Kufsaot (Boxes) and the top award for the open national category went to Samuel Bartlett for The Grand Design.

The story Top film prize for Times reviewer first appeared on The Sydney Morning Herald.
