As part of their economics studies the grade five and six students will be running miniature businesses on the day. It will be the culmination of about two months of hard work.
In their groups students will be selling heat packs, crayon moulds, garden products, and jewellery. For anyone who gets hungry there will be tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits sausage rolls, pizza and pancakes.
The students have been learning how to run a small business, including organising or making products, budgeting and working as a team. The money they raise will be put towards paying for the Annual Stawell West Primary School Push Cart Challenge and for a team to represent the school at the 2010 RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge in Maryborough.
This year the students will be making and racing three pushcarts in the Annual Stawell West Twilight Pushcart Challenge. They will be competing for the chance to be in one of the two teams which go on to the RACV Pushcart Challenge at Maryborough later in the year.
Within their groups students have had to create a business name, a business proposal, plan a budget, work out an advertising plan and create advertisements, create or source items to sell or prepare an activity to market on the day.
Completing order forms and purchasing the materials for their products have been important. Canvassing the local community for assistance and sponsorship has provided some resources.
Some local businesses have been very generous and have donated or discounted items. Parents and community members have provided help and assistance.
The Stawell West students invite people to come along on the day, between 9am and 1pm to take part in some of the activities or purchase some goods from their stalls.
The unit of work has included: Teamwork and getting along, Motivation and real life activities, Managing and resolving conflict, Incorporating 'You Can Do It' foundations, Mathematics - budgeting and money, English - Letter writing, advertising activities, reading, presentations, Seeking sponsorship and assistance, ICT and Technology, Thinking Curriculum activities.
