Northern Grampians Shire Council knows exactly what it is going to do with the $11,812,233 in Roads to Recovery funding announced this week.
The Northern Grampians Shire will receive the second highest amount of funds out of 10 local government municipalitiess in the Mallee electorate.
It will use the money to undertake vital maintenance on the municipality's roads, bridges and associated infrastructure over the next three financial years.
Mayor, Cr Murray Emerson has described the announcement of funds as 'gigantic' and 'outstanding'.
Council has been a fierce advocate for a greater amount of Roads to Recovery funding for many years.
Cr Emerson believes the delivery of funds isn't just a win for the shire's roads and bridges, it is a win for you - the ratepayer.
Almost half of the Northern Grampians Shire's current road maintenance measures are funded by the ratepayer. In turn that leads to higher rates.
The Mayor admits the 2015/16 budget was difficult to deliver, but necessary to balance the books.
It is hoped that a further injection of funds at this magnitude for other areas might stave off rate rises of a similar severity in future years.
Council is already promising to look at all of the services it provides with a view to implement cut backs where it can.
Luckily with this sort of money now being poured into our road network, that is one area that should escape any sweeping cuts.
