After playing off in the grand final for the past four years, the long seasons are taking their toll on players. So the newly formed coaching panel has decided against an early preseason.
As a precautionary measure, Navarre Football Club won't hit the track properly until late January.
The newly formed coaching panel of Daniel Parkin, Brent Flood, Louis Hannett and Wayne Driscoll have decided on a late preseason to give the players and committee a well earned break.
"We have played right through for the past four seasons so it is nice to get a bit longer break," Hannett said.
Hannett is a new addition to the coaching ranks, but given he had been the captain for so many years he is expecting his role to stay the same.
"I'm mainly there because I can get to each training session," Hannett said.
"My role won't change too much. I might have a bit more to say on game day, but that'll be about it."
So far Navarre has had several light sessions that have included some running and some ball work.
It has seen the usual suspects on the track with many of the players out of town unable to attend.
Of their premiership team from last season only two players have decided to not return.
Luke Hendy has left a big hole in their defence as he returns to Warriors and Sam Robertson has called it quits on his football career.
"Hendy has chosen to go back to Stawell and that is all good with us," Hannett said.
"He was a pretty big part of our back six so we will have to fill that spot. Sam battled through last season with injury and can't do it to himself again this year."
Navarre has done little recruiting apart from trying to fill the void left by Hendy.
"Our club never relies on recruiting. We just hope our young blokes keep coming back," Hannett said.
"We have had a couple of people put up their hand to play, so we will look into that in the new year."
With Hannett taking a coaching position the captaincy will be back on the table.
At this stage it will rotate between four players that form a leadership group.
"We have got a bit of an idea who will be in the leadership group, but nothing is set in stone," Hannett said.
