Lombo Pace Maker is a mature six year old gelding that trainer Stuart Cocks has had under his influence for the past five years after he bought him at the 2008 yearling sales.
Lombo Pace Maker was slow away in the Skinners Electrical Pace, but it was always the plan to hold him back in the race.
"Once he got through the first lap he was always a chance," Cocks said.
"He never really knows what he wants to do so it's (the win) a bit of a shock to us all."
With 400 metres to race, Lombo Pace Maker was still well back in the field .
Picking up the leaders with 20 metres to go Lombo Pace Maker was able to find a sprint lane and went to win by six metres.
As the horse crossed the line it was jubuilation for the Cock's stable.
Cocks admitted training Lombo Pace Maker proved a headache at times having paced him early in his career, before trotting him and then returning to pacing.
Cocks is yet to look into the next start for Lombo Pace Maker, but said it wouldn't be too far away.
The one downside of the win was a fine handed down to the driver, Leroy O'Brien by the stewards.
Lombo Pace Maker was at long odds heading into the race and punters who showed confidence in him would have been well rewarded.
