Big Hill mine - Neutral position adopted

A State Government-appointed panel has heard some Stawell residents are conflicted about whether to support the proposed Big Hill Enhanced Development Project.

A State Government-appointed panel has heard some Stawell residents are conflicted about whether to support the proposed Big Hill Enhanced Development Project.

GREG Cameron is a Stawell resident caught in a catch twenty-two situation when it comes to the proposed Big Hill mine project.

“My view on the project is neutral as I work at the mine and I can benefit from ongoing employment,” he said.

“But at the same time the historical mining sites that I am interested in will be destroyed.”

Mr Cameron told the panel that if the proposed project goes ahead he would like certain conditions enforced in an effort to protect as many of the old mining relics as possible.

The State Government-appointed panel took a break from hearing submissions yesterday afternoon to visit various sites at and around the Big Hill area.

The idea of the site visit was to give the four panelists a better idea of the proposed project’s location and other places of significance.
