Laurie and Tops-Alexander both faced a nervous and uncertain start to these Games, waiting to learn whether they could compete individually after Australia's jumping team was broken up because of Jamie Kermond's positive cocaine test.
The duo were ultimately given the green light by equestrian authorities, but neither rider was able to make the cut for Wednesday night's 30-strong final.
Laurie, who was riding Casebrooke Lomond, pulled the pin and retired from the event after approximately one minute.
The 35-year-old, who represented Australia after competing for New Zealand at the 2008 Olympics, failed to clear several obstacles cleanly at the start of proceedings.
Tops-Alexander, riding Identity Vitseroel, brought one rail down and finished equal 31st with a time of 87.93 seconds.
