Earlier in 2021, Mr Nicholson was elected as the new captain of the Stawell Fire Brigade.
He said volunteering with the brigade is his "passion".
"It is just something you do as a kid when you're in the rural area, you follow on from your father and brothers," he said.
"I get the most out of it by seeing the young people come through and upskilling them and being able to learn and teach them a lot.
"It is also about being there for your community. I don't play any sport, this is pretty much my passion.

"I started as a lieutenant and there were two brigades here, an urban and a rural and then they merged and there was a new team, so it has been a pretty exciting ride."
Mr Nicholson has been with the CFA for about 30 years, with 12 of those in Stawell, including 10 years in management positions.

Mr Nicholson also said he was relishing his new challenge as captain and encouraged others to volunteer their time to give back to their community.
"I suppose taking on the role as captain has been a challenge, but it has been exciting and I am proud of where the brigade is at the moment," he said.
OTHER NEWS:
"We have a good set up with a lot of team players and we are in a good spot with some new recruits and we are pretty happy at the moment.
"As captain, it takes up a little bit more time, but as you get into the management role you have got to be able to stand back into incident management, rather than just getting on the end of a house.
"You have to stand back, manage and run events which is sometimes difficult as you have the boot on the other foot as you are managing other people and organising other stuff."
During his time with the CFA Mr Nicholson said some of his highlights include difficult call outs.
"Some highlights are probably going away on strike teams like heading over the Alexandra on Black Saturday and Horsham on Black Saturday," he said.
"I have been away on some teams down to Riddles Creek and also during my time with the CFA the chance to just keep upskilling."
