On Sunday the Grampians Giants played their first match of 2021 against close rivals the Wimmera Whippets FNC at North Park in Stawell.

There was some new faces in the Giants team for the first game of the season with David K and Phil T making their Giants debut in the first game of the season.
In the first quarter with the Whippets were kicking with the wind and the backline of Simon C, Ryan P and Jamie W all stood tall and kept the Whippets from piling on a big first quarter score.
The Whippets and the wind made it tough to get the ball out of the backline and to the forwards.
In the second quarter with the wind the Giants were able to kick our first goal of the season with some help of one of the Whippets players who jumped across to help out with the numbers.

There was some great team work from all involved with Jake D clearing the ball from the middle to Russ H who kicked it into the 50 for the Whippets player to score the goal.
In the third quarter we were able to win the quarter kicking 2.2 to the Whippets 2.0.
This was a great quarter from the Giants and was topped off by a handball over the top from Russ H to Brandon M to kick the first goal by a Giants player.
In the fourth quarter the Giants put in another great effort keeping the Whippets to three goals whilst kicking one of their own.
OTHER NEWS:
Phil T on debut had a chance to kick a goal late in the quarter but the wind caught hold of it and unfortunately missed.
The final score was Giants 5.6.36 lost to Whippets 10.8.68.
Brandon M was the lone Giants goal kickers with some help from the Whippets players. The better players for the day were Simon C, Jake D, Jamie W, David K and Phil T.
Training will be on Friday night in Ararat (pending weather) from 4:30pm.
