Police say the 38-year-old Craigieburn woman fell from Boroka Lookout at around 3pm after climbing a barrier.
Northern Grampians Shire mayor Murray Emerson said it was "very sad reminder" to take care in the region.
"The Northern Grampians Shire sends their condolences to the family of the lady who tragically died at Boroka Lookout," he said.
"It is a very real and a very sad reminder that while you're holidaying in the Grampians, you have to take extra care, because there are a number of dangers associated with being in the area."
Cr Emerson said it was a particularly important reminder heading into the busy Christmas period.
"This time of the year there are lots of visitors to our region, and so it is especially important for people to be aware of where they are going, what they are doing, and how they can keep themselves safe," he said.
