Stawell acting Sergeant Sandra Marriner said the "large" burnout occurred on Cooper Street.
"We have had reports of a black sedan," she said.
"It was right around the time when the children were finishing school.
"We had a couple of people come forward, but we have got a little bit of a conflicting story. If there are any witnesses it would be great if they could contact Stawell Police."
Anyone with any information about the incident is urged to contact Stawell Police on 5358 8222.
