Students were in awe, a man living in the town had spent his whole life there and also attended the same primary school as them.
Each student lined up to wish Mr Hannett a happy birthday who was sitting behind his front fence - a delight for him and his family.
What happened next threw Mr Hannett an even greater surprise.
More than 50 cars decorated with balloons, streamers and flags travelled down High Street - with well-wishers shouting their messages to Mr Hannett.
Mr Hannett's son Gary said he was grateful to family and friends for putting on a "show" for his father under the coronavirus restrictions.
"Of course we would have loved to have thrown him a party and welcomed everyone to celebrate," he said.
"Given the times we are in I think it was a pretty good celebration enjoyed by not only Dad but by everyone in the community."
Gary thanked all those who travelled and took their time out of their day for the celebration.
"We had people travel from Stawell, Maryborough, Moonambel, Swan Hill and outlying areas," he said.
"Thanks needs to go to Sue who brought down the students - it was a real highlight."
Mr Hannett enjoyed some cake in the afternoon and headed off to bed early after a video call with other family members who couldn't make it on the day.
