Stawell, Ararat, Halls Gap, Laharum, Harrow and Edenhope could be affected by damaging winds in the next five hours.
The Bureau of Meteorology's latest update states damaging north to northwesterly winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely across the central and eastern parts above 600m in elevation this evening.
These are likely to rapidly ease away from the coast in the west and central districts following the front on Thursday.
A gust of 100 kilometres per hour was recorded at Mount Willian on Wednesday afternoon.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Be aware that trees that have been damaged by heat or fire may be unstable and more likely to fall when it is windy or wet.
- Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
- If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
- Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
- Stay away from fallen powerlines always assume they are live.
- Stay informed monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency.
Update 5pm Tuesday:
Halls Gap and Ararat are among the locations that could be affected by the cold fronts and damaging winds moving through Victoria.
In its latest update, the Bureau reports damaging north to northwesterly wind, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h, are likely to develop across elevated areas before dawn on Wednesday.
Winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are forecast to extend to the remainder of the warning area during Wednesday morning.
The next warning is due at 11pm.
10.30am: A series of cold fronts will move over the south-west in coming days prompting a severe weather warning for damaging winds on Wednesday.
Wind will be north to north-westerly tomorrow, averaging 50 to 60 km/h, with peak gusts of 90-100 km/h, extending across the forecast warning area during the morning.
Gusts may reach 110 km/h above 1500m elevation.
Damaging winds will contract east during Wednesday, easing below warning threshold in the west by early afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Ararat, the Grampians and areas around Stawell.
Storms and rain are predicted from tomorrow through until the weekend.
A high pressure system over northern Victoria will move over the Tasman Sea today as a cold front and associated low pressure system cross waters south of the Bight.
The front is then expected to weaken and slide south-eastwards across Bass Strait on Wednesday, with another stronger front expected to cross Victoria on Thursday as a high pressure ridge extends over the Bight.
The ridge is expected to extend across Victoria during Friday as a weak cold front crosses waters south of the Bight.
