A record low temperature for Tasmania has been observed at Liawenee in the state's Central Highlands this morning, plunging to a freezing -14 degrees.

As at 6.01am today, it was just -14.2 degrees at the tiny town, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
In other news:
It represents the coldest temperature ever recorded in the state, topping the previous record seen 37 years ago.
It was on June 30 in 1983 that temperatures of -13 degrees were detected at Tarraleah Village, Butlers Gorge and Shannon.
By 7.02am this morning, the temperature at Liawenee had risen to -10.9 degrees.
Meanwhile, in Launceston, it got down to -1.6 degrees at 5.35am, and -2.8 degrees at Launceston Airport at 5.07am.
A maximum of 12 degrees is forecast for the city today, with morning frost and mostly sunny conditions.
