The Stawell and Ararat Cross Country Club is calling for starters for their opening event of a shortened running season at Stawell's Three Jacks Reserve on Sunday.
Under COVID-19 restrictions, only 20 runners will be allowed to compete in the five kilometre handicap race, sponsored by Shane and Robyn Young 's Stawell Sportspower.
The 14 race season, reduced from the usual 20, is conducted over a variety of distances, five to ten kilometres, on picturesque and sometimes challenging courses.
The beauty of handicap racing," said newly elected Club President Shevahn Healy, "is that it gives everyone a chance of winning...the fastest, the slowest; the youngest and oldest."
Highlights include the 6.5 kilometre Leo Watkins Championship race at Warrak, the 9 km AESC Cup at Stawell's Rifle Range Road, the 10km Blizzard Family Championship at Ararat and the prestigious 8km Lindsay Kent Memorial at Stawell.
The club is earnestly seeking new members and hopes to attract sport-deprived newcomers keen to maintain fitness during the COVID crisis.
A full syllabus of sponsors and events, entry, club membership, and Athletics Victoria registration can all be located on the club website sacccinc.org.
Under social distancing rules there is no sharing of vehicles travelling to and from the runs and members are asked not to bring family.
All races are scheduled to start at 9.45 am and runners should assemble at venues from 9.15 am.
