Australia and New Zealand beat out Columbia in a vote to co-host the 34-nation tournament in July and August, 2023.

Passionate soccer fan and player Kym Sirre said it was an incredibly exciting result.

Mrs Sirre hosts the Stawell Soccer Club's soccer Mum's initiative, encouraging women in and around Stawell to play the world's most popular sport.

She hoped having the World Cup on Australian soil could further encourage people to give the sport a try.

"I think it will give the sport a bit more of an avenue for women to get involved - and for them to know that they can proceed to the highest levels," Mrs Sirre said.

"It's really exciting for us and for the next generation to look up to."

Mrs Sirre added that the success and stardom of the Matildas could greatly contributed to the growth of soccer nation-wide.

"Sam Kerr has been amazing for the sport here," she said.

"A lot of the young ones look up to her for sure. This will just increase all of that buzz and enthusiasm."

Mrs Sirre said the Stawell Soccer Club were also hoping to add a women's team.

"The pathway (for girls) is getting better and there's been a lot of focus on it lately, but there's still room to grow," she said.

"We still need to get some better facilities for women, but I can see it growing."
